Centre for International English

The Centre for International English offers academic and English language bridge programmes for international students. These courses provide support and guidance to improve your English-language ability academically, and socially, within a UK university environment.

Staff at the Centre are fully qualified and professional teachers of the English Language. They have lots of experience in working with international students, so they understand and are supportive of students’ needs and ambitions.

Centre staff work closely with the University’s academic Faculties to make sure you will get the best preparation and support for your academic studies. The language programme you choose will depend on your English level and academic qualifications.

Cambridge English Language Testing

The Centre for International English is an accredited centre for the University of Cambridge ESOL English Language Tests. We were the first centre in South Wales to offer the computer-based FCE (First Certificate in English) and CAE (Cambridge Advanced). These are booked online via the University’s Commercial Services (UGCS).

Dates for forthcoming computer-based Cambridge tests in 2012 are:


Preliminary English Test (PET)

  • Saturday 11th August
  • Friday 14th September
  • Saturday 8th December


First Certificate in English (FCE)

  • Saturday 14th July
  • Saturday 11th August
  • Friday 28th September
  • Friday 30th November


Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)

  • Friday 10th August


The University of Glamorgan is also accredited to provide paper-based tests and the following University of Cambridge ESOL examinations:

  • Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
  • Business English Certificate (BEC)

Glamorgan English Language Tests

The Centre for International English runs regular English language tests to diagnose the English language level of prospective Glamorgan students. This test currently costs £80 and consists of an interview which tests your listening and speaking, a reading comprehension and an academic writing task. Students holding conditional offers for Glamorgan awards can apply for the test in the first instance by contacting ieadmin@glam.ac.uk.
